Entering this classic step-fronted house is like wading into a mousse of colour. The reproduction old master paintings, very blue walls and age-effect woodwork are classy to some tastes, but rather forced to others.
Rooms come in two main decor styles, of which the upper floor's cream with blue fleur-de-lys is less vivid than the red-and-gold stripes elsewhere. Neat, brightly tiled bathrooms have pink granite-effect stone-acrylic basins. The breakfast room makes a stylistic swerve towards the contemporary with well-presented Catherine Hunter ceramic chickens offering a stylish focus. A plaster angel serenades in the attractive but small garden area. The hotel is named for Anselmus Boetius De Boodt (1550-1632) who once lived here. He had been physician to eccentric Holy Roman Emperor Rudolf II and in classifying the emperor's rock-collections, came up with a book which was to prove highly influential in the new science of geology. Sadly for the hotel's publicists, however, Anselmus never gained anything like the international fame of earlier Belgium-based humanist Erasmus.
