Presiding over the vast Grote Markt, the impressive Renaissance-style stadhuis was designed by Cornelius Floris De Vriendt and completed in 1565. Its palatial facade is a blend of Flemish and Italian styles, an innovative departure from the standard Gothic architecture prevalent at the time of construction. The commanding gable is topped by a fine gilded eagle and flanked by statues representing wisdom and justice.
