Flapping blue window-shades and a cursive 'signature' across the 1875 facade gives this 20-room hotel an exaggerated up-market appearance. In fact it's a pleasant compromise between money-saving simplicity and reasonable comfort all in a great central location.
There's an old-fashioned charm to this place, especially in the breakfast-room/cafe which doubles as its entrance. Here you'll find tiled floors, a quaint mish-mash of sepia photos, old biscuit tins and paintings. The rooms lack sophistication but are quite sizeable and very reasonably priced. All are neat with clean, high-quality linens. Floors can be creaky, red-coloured walls are unevenly plastered and the old spiral staircase to reach the rooms is a little rickety. For regular guests these features are signs of character rather than faults. A major bonus is the location in the historic centre which hosts a Sunday morning bric-a-brac and antiques market.
