    Crossroads Café

    The city's chief exponent of the blues, this unpretentious café features regular live concerts (from 17:00 to 20:00 most Sundays) by local or visiting bands. There's also a free concert at 20:00 most Mondays. It's about 1km from the Grote Markt; tram 7 (direction Mortsel) stops at the front.

    Charlatan

    For dancing in town, head to Charlatan. This is Ghent's biggest music bar, doing live gigs most Thursdays and Sundays. This stalwart bar and venue is a local institution for live bands, DJ sets and parties - check the website or in-house leaflets to see what's on or just head on in like everyone else.

    Tucked into the remains of one of Bruges’ original town gates, this off-the-beaten-track tavern serves up huge portions of couscous (and offers free bread, a rarity in Belgium). But Du Phare is best known for its live blues/jazz sessions – check the website for dates. Bus 4 stops out the front.

    Though small, this is the city’s top venue for contemporary and world music, both live bands and international DJs. It also organises festivals including July’s Cactus Music Festival, held in the Minnewater park at the southern edge of the old city.

    Buster’s mixed-bag programme includes Tuesday’s live concerts (mainly jazz and rock; around €10) as well as its traditional Thursday jam sessions (free). Stand-up comedians and actors trying out material also do stage time here (in Dutch or English).

    This is an elegant bar with attitude. Upstairs is for drinking, downstairs is for dancing the night away. Beer flows and music pumps with acoustic guitar concerts on Monday nights and pop/rock concerts each Thursday from 20:00.
