Lonely Planet review for Musée Royale de l’Armée et d’Histoire Militaire

One for military buffs, this museum houses an extensive array of weaponry, uniforms, vehicles, warships and documentation dating from the Middle Ages through to Belgian independence and the mid-20th century. There’s a panoramic view of the park’s triumphal arch (built in 1880), the Arcade du Cinquantenaire, from the top floor.

Small country with a good museum, with a few surprises.

    davidbfpo recommends this,

Visited this week due to my interest in military history and it was raining. A mix of old-style displays for the 19th century uniforms, muskets and swords compared to the more modern, clever settings for later conflicts - such as the bunker shapes for WW2. A good aerospace collection, very few armoured vehicles and there is space for the navy too.

Stunning display of Imperial Russian Imperial Guard uniforms and silverware.

Quite hard to follow many of the displays as there are no signs in English. I will have check for answers to some questions. Did you know Belgian troops were involved in the intervention in Mexico, to guard Emperor Maximilian's consort, a Belgian princess? Harder was their experience fighting what appeared to be Arabs or Dervishes in the 1890's.

Note the museum shuts at lunchtime, except the aerospace part - where there is a small cafe.
