If you yearn to be ensconced in mahogany, oak, regal fabrics, and plush carpets, this fastidious old-school hotel should fit the bill. Among the stratospheres of the 266 rooms are 'standards' with draped bedheads and royal-purple upholstered chairs.

There are also suites with Italian Bulgari bath products, grand bathrooms and retractable walls separating the sitting areas; and the 'Royal' suite, which will set you back a cool king's ransom. The business centre's helpfully staffed between 08:00 and 16:00. Wrought-iron gates guard the rust-coloured breakfast room, with its dramatic stained-glass ceiling. Take high tea (scones, finger sandwiches and the like) in Chutney's bar. For refined dining on French cuisine, the on-site restaurant, Chutney's, with its pressed metal ceilings, club lounges and leopard-print flooring is posh enough to round out any James Bond fantasies.
