Lonely Planet review

Built in the 1950s for the Brussels expo on the site of a 16th-century prison, this über-exclusive hotel was taken over by Rocco Forte and refurbished earlier this decade. Service is the Amigo's forte, with more permanent staff members (180) than rooms (174).

Laid with the same original blue granite stones in the lobby that once also graced the Grand Place one block away, today the two main influences on the hotel's very streamlined, contemporary decor are Belgium's celebrated surrealist painter, René Magritte, and Belgium's beloved comic-strip hero Tintin. Decorations include wooden sculptures of apples and pears inspired by Magritte's paintings, with Tintin figurines and prints in the marble bathrooms. Upstairs, whisper-quiet corridors are luxuriously carpeted, and accoutrements include high thread-count linens, hypoallergenic Italian bath products, and the most designer of Belgium's chocolates, Pierre Marcolini, in the minibars. Suites (all have Bang & Olufsen TVs and sound systems) with connecting doors are available. On the ground floor, the first-class Bocconi Ristorante offers delicious Italian fare. Rooms for wheelchair users are available; children under 12 stay for free.
