  1. A

    Stereo Sushi

Hipsters head to this anime-adorned, fuchsia-tinged place for platters of sushi before grooving to DJs like the Milkshakerz and the Breakbeatles. Just how strict the door policy is depends on how busy things are, but glamming up is de rigueur here in any case.

    Bazaar

Bazaar is an over-the-top restaurant with flamboyant décor and international fare like ostrich in port wine (mains around €13 to €23). Downstairs, DJs spin rock, soul and funk in the vaulted former monastery cellar-turned-nightclub.

    Duke’s

Done out in outrageous kitsch (lots of velour) by Miguel Cancio Martins of Buddha Bar, Paris fame, this club inside the Royal Windsor Hôtel lures an over-30s crowd. Yes, that means ‘80s tracks play alongside more up-to-date tunes.

  4. Petrol

Reggae, electronica, drum and bass and more make this pumpin’ venue a perennial favourite, as does the relaxed dress code, which keeps things (pretty much) pretension-free. It’s about a 2km walk (or taxi ride) from ‘t Zuid.

  5. Culture Club

This is hipster heaven, with serious lighting and some seriously hot DJs scratching on the decks. Check the online calendar before trekking out of town, and glam up for the door police or the trip will be in vain.

  6. Café Local

Styled like a crumbling Cuban backstreet, Café Local is a mecca for salsa and world music, as well as disco – check the agenda online and expect to pay between €5 to €10 admission.
