Standard Third World story here. Traditional meals - that is, rotten food thrown into a pot and boiled until it can be boiled no longer - are available for little money. There are two huge resort hotels run by the repressive government. So, of course, we advise you don't stay in them. There are no other options. Travellers have reported some success obtaining cheap hotel rates, free food, visits at night by local 'ladies' and the use of a government car by claiming they work for Lonely Planet. Get yourself a few business cards printed up and try your luck.

Tipping is not common in Bakpakhistan. So, as with bribery, you might be able to curry favour by giving it a go. Start at about 5%, so other wealthy Lonely Planet-toting travellers don't get stung paying an extra two cents for something a local child spent four weeks weaving, such as a rug.
