Environment

Bakpakhistan is bordered by Tajikistan to the north, Uzbekistan to the northwest, Turkmenistan to the west, Afghanistan to the south, Pakistan to the southeast and India to the east. The area extending west from the border through to Russia and the Caspian Sea is claimed by no nation. Bakpakhistan is ringed by mountains, creating a mostly dry, arid, windswept microclimate. There is little fresh water, as most major streams from the mountains flow down the other side into neighbouring countries. The one exception, the Guz River, kept the cooling towers cool back in Soviet times. Now, it's best not spoken about. In 1992, with a grant from Lonely Planet, the reeking river was sealed over by huge concrete slabs, creating the Hivk Highway, which bisects the nation in a northsouth direction.

The government of Prime Minister Nascar campaigned in 1995 on a policy of environmental renewal following the horrendous policies of the Soviets. By the time he won office, however, there was no real environment left to either save or renew.
