  1. Pfänder Cable Car

    The Pfänder rises sharply above Bregenz and affords a breathtaking panorama of the lake and the pointy peaks of the Alps. The cable car will whiz you to the top. At the summit, kids and fans of furry critters will love the Wildpark, a 30-minute circular trail bringing you close to deer, ibex and marmots in their near-to-natural habitat. There's also a Greifvogelflugschau (bird of prey show), where feathered performers amaze with aerial feats (11:00 & 14:30 May-Sep).

  2. Cable Car

    cable car rises up to Muttersberg (1401m), the starting point for numerous hiking, Nordic walking and cycling trails. If you don’t want to walk it, catch bus 1 from in front of the train station to the cable car station.

  3. Kletterhalle

    Practise clambering up boulders before tackling the real thing in the Alps at this excellent hall, run by the Austrian Alpine Club. The ticket office is on the 1st floor.

    The Diedamskopf cable car which climbs to 2090m, from the summit, paragliders launch themselves into the air and walkers trundle back down the side of the mountain.

    This is one of a number of companies taking you out onto the lake from April to mid-October. There are two-hour Bodensee panorama cruises (adult/child €15.20/7.60), one-hour Bregenz trips (€9.20/4.60) and regular boat transfers to lake destinations including Lindau, Mainau, Friedrichshafen and Konstanz.

    A lakefront contender 5km south of town, this lido has outdoor pools, barbecue areas, minigolf and a secluded FKK (nudist) beach for skinny-dippers.

    The Feldkirch region is criss-crossed with cycling trails, including the 30km Dreiländerweg (Three Country Trail), taking in beautiful scenery in Austria, Switzerland and Liechtenstein. Pick up the free Feldkircher Radwegkarte map from the tourist office.

  15. Downhill Skiing

    Though lesser known than other Austrian ski regions, the Bregenzerwald has fine downhill skiing on 255km of slopes, well suited to beginners, intermediates and ski tourers. Lift queues are virtually nonexistent and free ski buses shuttle between resorts. Nonskiers can shuffle through snowy forests on cross-country or snowshoe trails, go winter hiking or bump downhill on toboggan runs in Au and Damüls.

    Rheindelta

    Easily explored on foot or by bike, this nature reserve sits 5km south of Bregenz, where the River Rhine flows into the Bodensee. The mossy marshes, reeds and mixed woodlands attract more than 300 bird species, including curlews, grey herons and rare black-tailed godwits.
