Lonely Planet review for Tiergarten
Founded in 1752 as a menagerie by Franz Stephan, the Schönbrunn Tiergarten is the oldest zoo in the world. It houses some 750 animals of all shapes and sizes, including giant pandas that arrived in 2003. A batch of emus, armadillos and baby Siberian tigers joined them in 2006. Thankfully most of the original cramped cages have been updated and improved. The zoo’s layout is reminiscent of a bicycle wheel, with pathways as spokes and an octagonal pavilion at its centre. The pavilion dates from 1759 and was used as the imperial breakfast room. Feeding times are staggered throughout the day – maps on display tell you who’s dining when.

Very nice zoo year round!

I have been to Austria five different times now at all times of the year. We always make sure to go to this zoo.
It is not that expensive and you feel very close to the animals. It is not like a zoo in the USA where you need glasses to even see the animals.
Good for: Anyone who loves the Zoo
Not good for: People who can't walk long

Expensive, but almost worth the money

Tiergarten has a good selection of animals, from birds to snakes to monkeys to big cats.
The traditional Tyrolese farmhouse on top of the hill is one of the most impressive sights in this zoo, serving olde-world snacks inside. Also on the hill is a tree top trail with expansive views of Vienna.
This is a good zoo to see unusual animals, such as giant pandas and koalas, which many zoos don't have.
The layout is accessible with three different routes to see everything.
Before you pay to get in, ask about combined tickets to see other sights in Vienna, as this is a good way to save money.
The zoo has a wide range of food stalls, from cheap Langos stands to expensive dining. Expect to pay tourist prices.
At 14 euros per adults, this isn't a cheap attraction, but it's worth the money for a full day out.
Good for: food, Families, Couples, winter, animals
Not good for: animal rights activists
