Wrenkh
Wrenkh was long the cutting edge of vegetarian cuisine, and today is still the serrated edge – owner Christian Wrenkh has more recently introduced a handful of meat and fish dishes. The quality and presentation can be exquisite and everything is prepared with organic produce. Choose from the vibrant front section with its glass walls and chatty customers, or the quieter back room with its intimate booths.

Vegi Rant
A well-established restaurant with a strong nutritional bent, Vegi Rant has daily menus for hungry souls wishing to avoid meat. The food is imaginative, light and tasty; as the menu changes on a weekly basis (but always consists of a soup, main and dessert), expect anything from Linsengulasch (lentil goulash) to Topfenlaibchen (tofu loaf). While you're there, stock up on natural remedies and all sorts of healthy goodies at the health food store next door.

St Josef
You’ll find lots of places with vegetarian offerings in this neighbourhood, but St Josef is a canteenlike vegetarian place that cooks to a theme each day (Idian, for instance) and gives you the choice of a small or large plate filled with the various delights. It has a sparse, industrial character, which is part of its charm, and super-friendly staff who will point you in the right direction if you don’t quite know where to start.

Hollerei
The sleek wooden interior of Hollerei is the scene of some of the tastiest vegetarian dishes in town. Even the simple lentil soup is wonderfully spiced and fills a midday hole perfectly. A few tables are lined up outside when weather permits.

Lebenbauer
Sleek décor and quality upmarket vegetarian cuisine complemented by fish dishes are the highlights of Lebenbauer. The tables are a quite close together, though; here lone diners may not feel entirely at ease.
