  1. Artis International

    Artis has six small cinemas in the heart of the Innere Stadt. It only shows English-language films invariably straight out of Hollywood's larger studios.

  2. Eckert

    Located in the heart of Strebersdorf, a 10-minute walk from the tram 26 terminus (walk north on Russberg Strasse and right at Strebersdorfer Platz), Eckert is a cross between a traditional establishment and an arts centre. Paintings by local artists adorn walls, live music features once a month (anything from jazz to rock and roll) and readings are common. Tours of the wine cellars are offered, and kids generally get the run of the place.

  3. Mayer am Pfarrplatz

    Fifteen minutes' walk from U4 Heiligenstadt, Mayer caters to tour groups but still manages to retain an air of authenticity, helped along by its peaceful ambience, vine-covered surrounds and history (Beethoven lived here in 1817). The huge shaded garden towards the rear includes a children's play area, and there's live music from to daily.

  4. Skianlage Hohe Wand

    The Hohe Wand ski slopes can be used only when there is enough natural snow on the ground to bond with daily layerings of artificial snow. It's quite a way from the city centre, in the Wienerwald.

  5. Wiener Eislaufverein

    At 6000 sq metres, the Wiener Eislaufverein is the world's largest open-air skating rink. It's close to the Ringstrasse and Stadtpark. Remember to bring mittens and a hat.

  6. Wiener Eistraum

    Rathausplatz is transformed into two ice rinks in the heart of winter. It's a bit of a mecca for the city's ice skaters, and the rinks are complemented by food stands, special events, punch bars and a path that zigzags through the nearby park.
