Augarten
This picturesque park from 1775 is dotted with open meadows and criss-crossed by tree-lined paths. You can kick a ball in one section, let the kids stage a riot in a playground in another, visit a porcelain factory or art exhibition or watch a film in summer at Kino Unter Sternen in July and August. The Vienna Boys’ Choir also practises here, inside the Palais Augarten (Augarten Palace). Kids are likely to find the most captivating features of the park to be the austere Flaktürme (flak towers; ) in its northern and western corners. Locals are understandably protective of their Erlustigungsort (recreational space), which has come under threat by several construction…

More of a tourist novelty than anything else, a Fiaker is a traditional-style open carriage drawn by a pair of horses. Drivers generally speak English and point out places of interest en route. Lines of horses, carriages and bowler-hatted drivers can be found at Stephansplatz, Albertinaplatz and Heldenplatz at the Hofburg.

Krapfenwaldbad
With its elevated position among vineyards on the edge of the Wienerwald, Krapfenwaldbad has the best views of the city. Many who frequent the baths aren’t too interested in the cityscape (or the two small pools), however, but rather their fellow bathers. Even though there are plenty of grassy areas, it’s often full to overflowing.

Rising above the Wienerwald’s green canopy, the concrete Jubiläumswarte offers sweeping views from the uppermost platform that take in most of Vienna; on a windy day the climb to the top can be quite an adrenalin rush. You can walk here and back in less than three hours.
