I hope to do some hiking this summer in the Austrian Alps. I would like to find 2 or 3 villages/towns that I can use as a base from which I can do several day hikes. As I did in Switzerland, I would prefer to be able to use a gondola/lift to get to high elevations trails and then either walk back down to the village or walk parallel to the valley floor and descend using another gondola/lift. Alternately, I would be okay ascending to a high elevation trail from the valley bottom if the ascent is…

Hi, I am looking for more information about cheap accommodation on Lech Valley Way (www.lechweg.com). Since my German is very rusty, I am wondering what are the options for a budget traveler (hostels, etc.).
Does anybody know what is the situation like in July or August? Is it hard to find budget accommodation without reservation?
I am a single traveler, so double room with single occupancy is too expensive for me. I will drive to Lech or Füssen, so I will have to leave my car for 10 days.
I…

I was planning on visiting Salzburg from March 24-27. Several questions:
Will salzburg be beautiful and green during this time?
My concern is that everything will be close on Easter Sunday (March 27) (thats how it is in the states).
How is Eagles Nest? Is it a recommended visiting site?

Hello - I will be travelling to Austria next week for business (in the Kitzbuhel/Jochberg area), and am planning to extend my trip to explore Austria a little bit. I would love some suggestions!

I was thinking to head to Innsbruck, once I am done with work. A friend of mine suggested to check out the hot springs in Bad Gastein, and then was going to stop in Salzburg before heading to Vienna.

Any thoughts on that plan? Is there something I should see along the way? I have ~9 days to explore…

I bought diesel fuel from the unmanned gas station in front of Schloss Schönbrunn.
The gas station name is Doppler Mineralole GmbH.
I paid 70 euro, and got 27.83 euro receipt. However there is no change machine.
I talked with staff, and emailed. They send money to my bank account and paid bank commission kindly.
It is better to use credit card, or insert small money when use unmanned gas station.

I'm attending the symphony in Vienna sometime between December 27-30. Should I make the gentlemen wear tuxedos? Or are suits/ties ok? And will I need a floor length gown, or can I get by without packing my prom dress?

Thanks:)

Hi - me and my BF are spending 4 days in Graz (as well as two days in Wien). We want to spend one day outside Graz and don't mind travelling a bit to and from. We've considered Linz (3 h train), Maribor (1 h), Ljubljana (4 h) and Hallstatt (2,5 h). But we would love some tips on other places to visit! Must be reachable by train. What we'd really love would be to visit some small austrian villages. We love museums, cafes, restaurant, but also nature.

Thanks!!

Has anyone taken the direct train between Vienna (or Budapest -- same train) and Sofia? I'm interested in hearing about it: Comfortable? Clean? Modern (wi-fi, electric outlets)? Safe? If you had a sleeper, how was it? Any thoughts on first class vs. second class? I'll be starting my journey in Sofia, and I read in the Seat 61 blog that it is cheaper to buy a ticket at the station in Sofia than to buy in advance, which seems counter to everything else I've read about rail travel in Europe. Any…
