Gasteiner Heilstollen information
Böckstein's medieval gold mine has been reinvented as a much-celebrated health centre. Visitors get a brief health check and board a small train that chugs 2km into the humid 38°C depths of Radhausberg mountain, where you absorb the healing radon vapours, said to cure everything from arthritis to fibromyalgia.
Trial sessions give you a taste of the experience, but for the radon to have any lasting effect, a full three-week cure (€627.50) is recommended. Bus 550 shuttles regularly between Bad Gastein's train station and Böckstein (€2.40, eight minutes).
