  1. Brass Monkey

This massive pub boasts several different areas and vibes. Take your pick: sit up on a stool at the bar, lean back in the relaxed beer garden or hunker down on a Chesterfield by the fire. The food's good as well.

  3. Cottesloe Beach Hotel

Cottesloe Beach Hotel, or 'the Cott' for short, is the place for the famous Perth Sunday session. Go early (just after lunch) to avoid the queues that form to get into the beer garden, and laze around on the grass chatting to friends and strangers alike. The view from the beer garden is superlative and the vibe is fantastic.

  4. Deen

No self-respecting backpacker should leave town without attending the Deen's Monday 'backpacker night' - the perfect place to find your travelling partner for the Nullabor drive. Locals also flock here on weekends for live bands, DJs, funky pool tables and six separate bar zones with different moods and music.

  5. Funk Club

Like the man says, 'Funk is its own reward'. On Friday nights, the Funk Club is full of colour and fun. Recently relocated from Leederville to much-loved live music venue the Rosemount Hotel, the Funk Club's happy punters bop away for hours here, kicking off their weekend with a bang.

  6. Grapeskin

This gay-friendly wine bar, next door to the Brass Monkey, used to be a gym but today its attraction is lifting glasses of wine or cocktails rather than weights. It gets very crowded.

  7. Hip-E Club

A favourite with the backpacker crowd who just want to hit a dancefloor and have a laugh, this Leederville institution pumps out mainstream hits from the 70s, 80s and 90s. All your favourites are played, from the ones that make you laugh to the ones that make you cringe. Tuesday's backpacker night is especially popular.

  8. His Majesty's Theatre

You can catch the latest hit plays at the historic His Majesty's Theatre. Built in 1904, this is one of the state's premier venues to watch the West Australian Opera Company sing for their supper. You can also while away the hours browsing through the on-site museum which houses a collection of theatre memorabilia, with some items dating back to the 1850s.

  9. Hula Bula Bar

This tiny Polynesian-themed bar is decked out in bamboo, palm leaves and totems, and the ostentatious cocktails come in ceramic monkey heads. While it feels very much like Gilligan's Island, you won't mind being stranded, especially on the weekends.

  10. La Bog

This often jam-packed Irish pub is in Northbridge's backpacker heartland. It may be a package Irish franchise (there's one in Fremantle as well) but it's still a reasonable and popular place to sit and sip on a Guinness amongst friends. Live bands offer a fun night of dancing and the close means you can grab an early-morn nightcap.

  12. Leederville Hotel

The something-for-everyone philosophy of the old Leederville is etched out in the sports screens, dance floors, pool tables and, on Fridays, Funk Club, upstairs - and it does them all well.

  13. Little Creatures Brewery

Little Creatures is quite a gem. In a cavernous converted boat shed overlooking the harbour, this brewery can get chaotic at times (as can the service), but the home-brewed ales are well worth the wait. And the food is excellent - prosciutto-wrapped prawns, classic chilli tomato mussels, wood-fired pizzas. You can inspect the brewery vats yourself from the deck on the 2nd floor or almost nuzzle the boats from the boardwalk out back. No bookings.

  15. Must Winebar

Considering there's French house floating through the sound system and the perfect glass of wine in your hand (there are 40 by the glass, 500 on the wine list), it's very difficult to leave this buzzing bar in the thick of Beaufort St. It's probably the best wine bar in Perth, and the food's excellent.

  16. Subiaco Hotel

The Subi's a local favourite and the institution of choice for a pre-footy beer. It's also not bad for a Sunday sundowner or an afternoon of quiet beers and people-watching.
