Hello! i'm Briony i am 21 and planning my first backpackers trip to Australia leaving Edinburgh (UK) October 2016. I am unsure where to fly to and would like some advice! I plan on doing the east coast and ending up in Melbourne to work as part of my working holiday visa. I am thinking Cairns? - is this a popular place to start? would be good to hear from someone who has done the same as this or is planning on doing the route down?
also feeling a little apprehensive about finding travel…
can somebody recommend a backpacker hostel in Brisbane? I'll be landing there at the 4th of August and don't know where to go. And if anyone is in Brisbane around that time and wants to meet up message me:)
We will be driving Australia for the next five months -- landed in Sydney two days ago and hope to have our 4Runner clear customs in the next ten days.
We are traveling with two IPhones both using Verizon in the U.S. This is way too expensive to continue the Verizon use in Australia. Our computer is hooked up to Skype.
What is the best way for us to use our phones or a purchased phone in Australia?
We use the phones for mapping routes, texting to friends in the U.S. and elsewhere, the…
I'm flying out to Australia on Sunday (eek!) on a 12 month Working Holiday Visa, I've just had a look at the samples of the landing cards online and there are two questions which I'm a bit unsure about and I want to make sure I get them right!
- Do you intend to live in Australia for the next 12 months?
Obviously my visa will allow me to travel and work in Australia for 12 months, but would they class that as 'living'? Should I tick yes or no?
- There is a question about…

I am looking for hostel recommendations for my first trip to Austrialia this November. I usually do not pre-book anything but my first night, but I understand Sydney can be busy. Also, after a 30-hour flight, I do not see myself walking around scouting hostels.
- Attracts an older crowd (30+)
- Sociable, but not a party hostel
- Preferably in walking distance to main attractions in city centre/circular quay or alternatively good connections with public transportation.
So, the Australia dog quarantine laws are pretty well-known now because of the Johnny Depp incident but until now, I was largely unaware of such a quarantine. My husbands is Australian living in America with me and I haven't been to Australia yet to visit his family. The situation that we're running into is that I have a dog that gets severe separation anxiety...so much so that a doctor issued him emotional support certification so he's my emotional support dog. He can travel on planes with me…
We land in Sydney in 36 hours for a five month drive around of Australia. We will circle the country, drive Tasmania and drive through the center of the country.
Does anyone have recommendations on bird guides for two people with their own 4Runner? Or birding organizations which recommend local bird guides?
As long as I am asking; Any recommendations on any guides or guide companies to use in our travels through Australia?
Thanks for any recommendations anyone can provide.
I'm struggling to pick between Sydney, Cairns, Surfers Paradise and sounding areas in Gold Coast for my first port of call in Australia, wherever I pick I will stay for 1-3 months on my working Visa.
Please could anyone suggest/recommend what city you think would be best for work around July - October time I'm very flexible as I have nothing booked as of yet! I'm planing to go to stay with family friends at the end of October in Perth and I already have a job lined up on my arrival there…
I have been reading guidebooks and having trouble narrowing our very short trip. My husband and I (in our 50's) fly into Sydney arrive November 22nd depart on December 2nd. Our interests are wildlife in natural habitat, history/culture and trying to stay clear of tourist/crowded places as much as possible. We will spend 3 nights in Sydney and then fly somewhere else, but where? We can do one in-country flight (maybe two if necessary). Considering it is November and our limited time, should…
