Bar entertainment in Western Australia

  1. A

    Subiaco Hotel

The Subi’s a local favourite and the institution of choice for a morning coffee with the papers or a pre-footy beer. It’s popular, too, for a Sunday sundowner or an afternoon of quiet beverages and people-watching.

  2. B

    Wild West Saloon

For an anthropological experience, the front bar at the Exchange Hotel provides a window into some locals’ lives at all hours of the day, with skimpies, TV sports and mine workers furiously refuelling.

  3. C

    Luxe

With retro wood panelling, big sexy lounge chairs and red-velvet curtains, Luxe is knowingly hip. Like any serious bar, it’s also armed with turntables and a specialist cocktail bar.

  4. D

    Bungalow Bar

Located next door to the Roebuck Bay Hotel, Bungalow is a popular late-night destination that draws a better-dressed crowd, which comes for cocktails and electronica.

  5. E

    Leederville Hotel

The something-for-everyone philosophy of the old Leederville is etched out in the sports screens, dance floors and pool tables – and it does them all well.

  6. F

    Tides Bar

On Friday nights locals like to sink a few beers here on the outdoor terrace overlooking Roebuck Bay; in the Mangrove Hotel.

  8. H

    Grapeskin

Grapeskin is the Monkey’s somewhat up-market wine-bar cousin. It gets very crowded.

  9. I

    Tides Garden Bar

The Mangrove Resort's casual outdoor bar is just the place for a few early-evening beverages while contemplating Roebuck Bay. There're good bistro meals, half-price oysters between 5.30pm and 6.30pm, and live music towards the end of the week, including touring big names. You don't need to move to watch the Staircase to the Moon.

  10. Sunset Bar & Gril

Arrive around 4.45pm, grab a front-row seat, order a drink and watch the show – backpackers, package tourists, locals, camels and a blistering Indian Ocean sunset tinged by imported coconut palms.

    Helvetica

Clever artsy types tap their toes to delicious alternative pop in this bar named after a typeface and specialising in whisky and cocktails. The entry is off Howard St: look for the chandelier in the lane behind Andaluz tapas bar.

  13. K

    Ezra Pound

Down a much graffitied lane leading off William St, Ezra Pound is favoured by Northbridge's bohemian set.

  14. Elba

Elba has taken its street name as inspiration and produced a slick little Napoleonic bar complete with sparkly chandeliers and a gilt-framed portrait of the little man. Come dressed for cocktails, although perhaps in flats out of deference. Napoleon St is one of the shopping streets running off the Stirling Hwy.

  15. Court

A large, rambling gay and lesbian venue consisting of an old corner pub and a big, partly covered courtyard with a clubby atmosphere.

  17. 399

It doesn't look like much from the outside, but this little local bar is an exemplar of the kind of personable establishment the new licensing laws have brought to Perth.
