    Bernard’s Magic Shop

Australia’s oldest magic shop, open since 1937, Bernard’s sure knows a good whoopee cushion, fake vomit or fly-in-the-ice-cube when it sees one. Practical jokes aside, there are also items for the budding magician such as rope and card tricks and instructional videos.

    Zakkaya

Cute without the kitsch, these Japanese homewares, accessories and small range of fashion pieces have a touch of ’70s nostalgia and a slather of Gen-Y joyfulness. Rare craft magazines will get your stitching juices flowing, even in kanji.

    Third Drawer Down

Abigail Crompton designs and commissions witty rethinks of everyday objects. Illustrative, hand-printed tea towels were the beginning, now there’s ‘artkerchiefs’, ‘bubkins’ and ‘artprons’. Both shop and gallery, it’s equally good for grabbing gifts or leisurely browsing.
