  1. Kyabram Fauna Park

    Kyabram Fauna Park is respected throughout the region for its devotion to native species. Kangaroos, koalas, Tasmanian devils and dingoes live here in natural habitats. There’s a large number of bird species in aviaries and a variety of waterbirds in the wetlands section.

  2. Whroo Visitors Centre

    South of Rushworth is Whroo Historic Reserve (pronounced ‘Roo’), an old gold-mining ghost town with relics aplenty: old mine shafts, cyanide vats (used for separating the gold from quartz), puddling machines, and the Balaclava open-cut mine – walk through the tunnel. Whroo visitors centre has a café and a newly produced DVD and history book for sale; see the area as it was and trace the local history. The town once had over 130 buildings, but the ironbarks have reclaimed much of it.   3. Shepparton Art Gallery

    Make sure your stay here includes a visit to the Shepparton Art Gallery. Its permanent collection of Australian art includes Goulburn River near Shepparton (1862) by Eugene von Guèrard, depicting McGuire’s punt crossing the river. A separate gallery houses temporary and touring exhibitions.

  4. Golden Cow Centre

    The indigenous peoples of this area called the Murray River tongala. Northwest of Kyabram, the town of Tongala boasts the Golden Cow Centre, a working dairy with amazing, interactive displays on the dairy industry (milk a tin cow!) and the best milkshakes in Australia.

  5. Rushworth Historical Museum

    Rushworth’s High St, classified an historic precinct, is divided by a central plantation and a Victorian band rotunda. You hardly need to visit the Historical Museum in the old Mechanics Institute to get a feel for the past.

    An indigenous gallery, museum and keeping place, that is well worth a visit for its unique collection of Koorie art and artefacts, and wonderful dioramas.
