  1. Victorian Goldfields Railway

    Maldon train station was built in 1884. Harry Potter types can go by steam with the Victorian Goldfields Railway along the original track through the Muckleford Forest to Castlemaine. For a little extra, go first class (adult/child/family $40/23/93, Sunday only) in an oak-lined viewing carriage. Magical!

    The Old Post Office built in 1870, was the childhood home of Henry Handel Richardson. She (yes, she!) writes about it in her autobiography, Myself When Young (1950).

    Maldon’s best bet for an evening meal, Two Fat Men lovingly prepares Asian-influenced dishes such as tempura prawns and Mod Oz such as peppered kangaroo steak, washed down with local wines.

  10. Porcupine Township

    A quaint theme village recreating the years leading up to the gold rush (1835 to 1853) with a collection of some 40 original slab buildings, including miners' huts, a dance hall and a resident ghost. There are no costumed characters here but kids will enjoy a carriage ride and possibly some panning.

    In a lovely heritage building tucked away from busy Main St, this light-filled cafe-restaurant features changing exhibitions. It's a great spot for coffee, but the Mod Oz menu of pasta, smoked trout and Daylesford venison is hard to beat.

    A 570m-long mine tunnel, excavated in the 1880s, that took two years to dig yet produced only $300 worth of gold. Now you can descend with a guide for a 45-minute candlelight tour.
