Tour description provided by Intrepid

Get acquainted with southern Australia's oh-so-spectacular stretch of coastline on a four-day road trip from Melbourne to Adelaide that takes in Kangaroo Island. Watch giant surf crash dramatically against the Twelve Apostles, peer up at sleepy koalas snuggled away in their gumtree hide-outs and perhaps spy dolphins surfing your ferry's wake over to Kangaroo Island. Suss out Vivonne Bay's local nightlife on a guided night walk, watch penguins patter up the beach at Point Ellen and see why Remarkable Rocks are named what they are. A world away from the crowds, parties and high-rise skylines that often predominate Australia's more famous northern beaches, the coast of southern Australia is in a league of its own when it comes to the spectacular.

Itinerary

Day 1 Melbourne/Great Ocean Road
Leave Melbourne's edgy and eclectic metropol for the stupendous coastal scenery of the Great Ocean Road. Stop by the global surf industry hub of Torquay and check out the waves rolling in at Bells Beach before hitting the Great Ocean Road proper. Spy koalas at Kennett River, break for lunch in quaint Apollo Bay and be romanced by every twist and turn of one of the world's most scenic drives. After gazing at the Twelve Apostles, London Bridge and Loch Ard Gorge, head inland for a night in Halls Gap.
Day 2 Grampians National Park/Adelaide
Wake to the gloriously craggy mountain scenery of the Grampians National Park. Set out on a number of short hikes to some impressive look-outs and visit one of two waterfalls.
Day 3 Adelaide/Kangaroo Island
Cruise across the Backstairs Passage from Cape Jervis to Kangaroo Island. Wander among lounging sea-lions in Seal Bay, get active sand boarding down the Little Sahara dunes and perhaps head out for a paddle down Harriet River. When dusk settles in, grab a flashlight and embark on a guided night hike in search of nocturnal critters.
Day 4 Kangaroo Island/Adelaide
Head out to Flinders Chase National Park early to score crowd-free views of Remarkable Rocks. Watch fur seals do their thing in Cape Du Couedic and chow down on a barbecue lunch before working it off with a walk up Ironstone Hill. Board the ferry back to the mainland and wrap up this Melbourne to Adelaide Explorer trip on arrival in Adelaide.
