Painting in the West MacDonnell's with artist Leo Robba
Art Expeditions In 2006 a group of professional artists travelled through the West MacDonnell Ranges searching for inspiration. The artists were guided and supported throughout by World Expeditions, freeing them to focus their energies on the artistic output. The resulting body of work was exceptional, each artist had responded with stunning range of drawings and paintings (Postcards from the Desert, Damien Minton Gallery). The combined inspiration of the landscape and working alongside other artists had helped each artist produce a range of great works. In 2007 the same artists travelled again with World Expeditions across the North East of Tasmania, with equally spectacular results (Devils in Paradise, Damien Minton Gallery). As a result of the successful artistic expeditions, painter Leo Robba has joined with World Expeditions to offer similar expeditions to all interested artists, amateur and professional alike. Each Art Expedition will be escorted by Leo Robba, he will provide directions and assistance to artists in the field, helping them reach their artistic potential and develop their skills in the field. This is not artistic tuition, but a shared creative experience. A professional team of World Expeditions guides will provide exceptional food and camping hospitality as well as guided walks and transfers to selected scenic locations. A key benefit of these expeditions is that artists will have access to spectacular wilderness locations.

Itinerary
Day 1 Old Telegraph Station and Wallaby Gap.
We pick you up from your accommodation between 7am and 7.30am. Our artistic field trip begins with a morning session at the Alice Springs Telegraph Station, which marks the beginning of the Larapinta Trail. The stone buildings here date back to 1872 and they housed the first Europeans to live in Central Australia. In the afternoon we will transfer to our bush camp in hills beyond Simpson's Gap, enjoying the magnificent vista looking down the Alice Valley.
Day 2 Simpson’s Gap and Standley Chasm
We will set up for the morning in locations around the spectacular Simpsons Gap if we are lucky we may catch sight of a shy Echidna or Black-footed Rock Wallaby. A short transfer takes us to the stunning Standley Chasm where we can walk to some extraordinary locations deep within the rugged heart of Standley Chasm. We transfer to our wilderness campsite near Simpsons Gap.
Day 3 Ellery Creek, Serpentine Gorge
We will explore some more exceptional locations in the gorges and canyons of the Chewings Range, Ellery Creek and Serpentine Gorge. We will camp at our exclusive bush campsite nestled in the hills near Serpentine Chalet
Day 4 Serpentine Chalet
We have a full day in the Serpentine Chalet area allowing us to make the most of the desert wilderness for inspiration. We will camp at our exclusive bush campsite nestled in the hills near Serpentine Chalet
Day 5 The Ochre pits and Ormiston Gorge
Today we explore the vibrant colour of the Aboriginal quarry at the Ochre Pits. In the afternoon we will visit the stunning Ormiston Pound with its great red cliffs and serene desert waterhole.
Day 6 Mount Sonder and the Finke River
Today we will take viewpoints toward the unmistakable eastern flanks of Mt Sonder, known as the pregnant lady by the local Aranda people.
Day 7 Gosses Bluff and Hermansburg
We will take the Meerenie Loop Road allowing a visit to the ancient comet impact structure of Gosses Bluff (Tnorala). A short visit to Hermansburg also reveals the rich artistic heritage of this country and its people. We drive back in to Alice Springs, concluding around 5 or 6pm.

Accommodation Summary
During the trip you camp with swags* and tents. You will be experiencing the Territorian style of camping, so your participation will be appreciated. The guides will prepare all the meals and run the camp, however you will be asked to contribute by putting up your own tents and rolling out swags. Participation around the camp will make for a more enjoyable experience for everybody. o We supply swags to sleep on. A swag is comprised of a three-inch thick foam mattress with a canvas cover to keep it clean – they are very comfortable. o Your swag contains a pillow with pillow cover and one sheet. o Swags are rolled out inside Mozzie Dome style tents, these offer sleeping under the stars while protecting from bugs and converting to weatherproof tents in case of rain. o Sleeping bags are essential for warmth. You can bring your own or hire. They are available for hire for $20, so please contact WE reservations staff if you require one. We ask that you provide your own inner sheet if you hire a sleeping bag. Most groups are made up of a mixture of single participants and couples. If you are travelling alone you will share a tent with someone of the same sex. This usually sorts itself out naturally. A single tent supplement is available at $50 for the week.
