A classic cycling tour through the alpine valleys and wine districts of Victoria's picturesque north-east

The alpine valleys of north-east Victoria have earned a reputation as one of the most exciting regions in Australia for food and wine. It is also a place where mountain wilderness surrounds fertile valleys and local producers are guided by a rich heritage. A cycle trail winds its way through the district following the well graded railway easement built during the gold rush. Pedalling your way through vineyards, dairy farms and heritage towns in to the heart of the high country this active journey offers the perfect opportunity to experience the delights of the region. Following a sealed cycleway, you are free to enjoy the local scenery and hospitality without the worry about roads and traffic. When combined with experienced cycle guides and transfers that make the most of the cycling - whether flat or downhill - this cycling journey opens up a whole new way to appreciate the natural beauty of regional Australia. Self guided versions of this itinerary are also avaialable on request.

Meet in Melbourne for breakfast and bike fitting. Ride the Yarra Valley Cycle Trail for a leisurely introduction. The afternoos is at leisure for shopping or even more cycling on the great network of trails. Our accommodation is a Melbourne City Hotel

Day 2 Depart Melbourne early for Wangaratta, begin cycling to Milawa (15km)

We take the train from Southern Cross Station to Wangaratta. Our ride begins from the railway station, following cycleways to the King Valley wine region centred on Milawa. Our accommodation is the Milawa Motel

Day 3 Ride to Everton and Murray to Mountains Cycleway, to Myrtleford and Bright (51km)

From Milawa we cycle through country backroads to Everton where we join the Murray to Mountains Cycleway. The paved cycle path follows an old railway easement and so is remarkably straight and well graded. A gentle ascent takes us over Taylors Gap in to the stunning Ovens River Valley. The many wineries offer a tempting break from the scenic cycling. Our destination is the alpine resort town of Bright and our accommodation at a quality local motel

Day 4 Transfer to the alpine summit of Mount Buffalo, exhilarating decent back in to Bright

The stunning granite monolith of Mount Buffalo beckons from high above the valley. We will take a minibus to transfer ourselves and bikes to the high country. After a walk and explore we have the option for an exhilarating descent, cycling down the mountain road to Bright. The afternoon is at leisure in Bright, with options to hire mountain bikes for the many excellent MTB tracks nearby. Our accommodation is our Bright Motel

Day 5 Optional ride to Myrtleford (15km), transfer to Yakandandah and ride to Beechworth (25km), optional Canyon Ride (12km)

We have the option of a gentle 15km ride following the Ovens River Valley back to Myrtleford where we take a minibus transfer up to yackandandah and a ride back to the idyllic heritage town of Beechworth. Our accommodation is a hotel in Beechworth

Day 6 Descend the old railway easement to Everton, ride across the plains back to Wangaratta (53km)

The Murray to Mountains Rail Trail is shaped like a 'Y' and one of the arms is Beechworth. From here we descend over 200 meters through the forest and we roll downhill toward Everton.
