Tiwi Islands Sailing Cruise

Sailing voyage exploring the Arnhem Land Coast and Tiwi Islands
The idyllic waters of the Arafura Sea offer a great wilderness experience, from the luxury of the sailing catamaran, Sundancer NT. With its shallow draft and small groups (just 4 comfortable double cabins) we can explore the Tiwi Islands and briefly visit Bare Sand Island. This adventure is a great add on to our 7 day Explore Kakadu and Beyond trip.
Highlights
- Cruise the remote areas of Northwest Arnhem Land and the Tiwi Islands
- Experience remote local Aboriginal culture and arts
- Intimate and personal sailing adventure
Itinerary
Day 1 Darwin to Tiwi Islands
Embark at Cullen Bay marina in Darwin at about 8am for a briefing and prior to departure through the lock at 9am. We then sail north to the Tiwi Islands and travel up the Apsley Strait which separates Bathurst Island and Melville Island. Our overnight anchorage is just south of the community of Pirlangimpi (Garden Point).
Day 2 Visit the Pirlangimpi Community and the Munipi Arts and Crafts Centre
Going ashore in the morning we will walk through the community to the Munupi Arts and Crafts Centre to meet with local Tiwi artists. Guests will have an opportunity to purchase art or craft from the centre later in the day. Activities may include a visit to the local school, instruction in Tiwi painting and weaving, swimming in a fresh waterhole, trying some bush tucker or just talking about Tiwi culture. We will return to the boat for sundowners and dinner and anchor a few miles south of the community, again in the calm waters of Apsley Strait.
Day 3 Visit the Nguiu Community and the Tiwi Arts and Crafts Centre
After another relaxing breakfast we motor south along the Apsley Strait, stopping at the largest community in the Tiwi Islands at Nguiu, on Bathurst Island, where guests take part in the Tiwi Tours tour then visit the Tiwi Arts and Crafts Centre. Our overnight anchorage is again in Apsley strait with the opportunity to fish or just relax in the evening.
Day 4 Bare Sand Island and return to Darwin
We set sail early in the morning to Bare Sand Island, the nesting site for flatback turtles. Green and hawksbill turtles forage in large numbers on the rocky reefs in the region and there will be ample time for you to go ashore and walk around the island. We will have lunch at Bare Sand Island then sail back into Darwin in the late afternoon. We finish the adventure by guests joining the crew for dinner at one of the many restaurants at Cullen Bay.
