Lonely Planet review for Moorilla Estate

Moorilla Estate sits on a saucepan-shaped peninsula on the Derwent River 12km north of Hobart’s centre. Since its founding in the 1950s, Moorilla has played a prominent role in Hobart society. Stop by for wine and beer tastings, have lunch or dinner at the outstanding restaurant The Source or splash some cash for a night in the deluxe accommodation (doubles $395). Moorilla also plays host to some great summer concerts on its grounds – Grinspoon, Cat Empire and The Pretenders have featured in recent times. Note that the renowned Mona museum here is closed for long-term redevelopment.

Mona is a museum for everyone, from children to seniors.

    fadge recommends this,

I have had the great pleasure of visiting Mona on five occasions and have nothing but praise for this wonderful, unique museum. I found the staff to be invariably friendly and helpful. The exhibits range from the awe inspiring ancient artifacts to some really challenging examples of contemporary art, not all of I liked, I must admit. On the other hand I discovered that I can appreciate and enjoy different forms of visual art in ways I had never anticipated. On three of my visits I was accompanied by grandchildren, ranging in age from 5 to 13 and not only did they love the chance to experience art by touching as well as looking, they all wish to return. I have also eaten a very pleasant lunch at the cafe and as someone with specific dietary requirements I was impressed by the variety and quality of both the food and service. I would recommend a visit to this wonderful museum to people of all ages. I will be going back!

    Shockingly bad service.

    esbs does not recommend this,

After an interesting couple of hours in MONA (don't bring the kids), we went across to the beautiful new tasting room and cellar door at Moorilla Estate. As it was a Sunday, we were prepared for it to be busy, but not prepared for the treatment we received. It had been busy recently, as evidenced by the empty tasting glasses lined up, but was in a lull. We took high stools at a tasting station, and waited for the glasses in front of us to be cleared. And waited, and waited. Eventually, we cleared them ourseles so that we could get to the flip book of tasting notes. Neither of the two ladies behind the counter acknowledged us, even when one came over and used the glass washer right in front of us! Not so much as a 'be with you in a minute'. We waited while one of them had a long conversation about pharmaceutical trials (!) with the gentleman next to us, and studiously ignored us. After 5 full minutes of no service, we walked out. We've never had such bad service at a cellar door, and found it to be such a blight on a beautiful new building and winery complex.
