Annapurna

My first night in Hobart I found my way to Annapurna for a well earned bite. The joint was jumping, so I made a reservation for a bit later and explored the neighbourhood while I waited for my table.

It was well worth the short wait.

A diverse menu with plenty of princely stand alone dishes and mixed platters if you're in an indecisive (or sharing) mood. It's not dirt cheap (you're looking at $15 plus for a hearty feed), but it's exceedingly good value for the quality (and comparatively, around said neighbourhood).

I shared a Thali combo plate with a selection of scrumptious vegetarian and meat dishes (with rice and Naan). But it was the entree, Bombay Fried Prawns, that blew me away. Hands down the most delicious prawns I've ever had. The home-made coconut and mango dip was scrumptious (I wanted to run off with a vat and smother it on everything I ever eat, for all time).

Service was gentle and considered, the atmosphere abuzz with students, arty folks and visitors (seemingly all from Melbourne the night we were there).

A stimulating sampler of Hobart gastro-culture. I'd go back in a flash.

went there with some friends on friday night ( salamanca), was very busy got a greeting with one of the staff sitted well..very cordial atmoshphere...got the advise about the indian food....we ate banquet special which was damn good & awesome....service was excellent & got food in 10 minutes as we were travelling all around and hungry,so it was all well. I think we got the right selection & the best food which we ever had. We tried North hobart on sunday night DOSA was amazing...in short, the best food with excellent service 

went there from the LP rave reviews.  left feeling ripped, bored and irritated.
food took an hour for 4 of us.  hair in drink. food was cold on arrival. ordered the chefs special - was drab, cold curry. no pilau rice (white). poor service - 3 requests for water. 
Salamanca restaurant didn't serve the masala dosa we specifically went for (only on Elizabeth St, sorry!).  Don't go here if you have dignity.

The biggest problem at the Annapurna is deciding between the jingha or balti prawns. Throw in a naan and some rice and it's easily enough to feed two. And for singles, they'll pack your leftovers so you'll be the envy of the hostel kitchen the next morning.
