Restaurants in Bass Strait Islands

  1. Grassy Club

The chef in the restaurant here can be hit-and-miss, but at least he’s ambitious. Expect creative mains utilising produce from around the island (often involving cheese) served attentively in discreet surrounds.

  2. Nautilus Coffee Lounge

Nautilus is your best bet for a near-decent coffee and a big island breakfast. Ponder the local art on the crimson walls as you chow into a feta-and-scrambled-egg croissant with orange mustard dressing ($16).

  3. Boathouse

This weather-beaten old boathouse on Currie Harbour has been turned into a free, artsy ‘restaurant with no food’ – you bring the edibles and wine; the plates, cutlery and glasses are in the cupboard.

  4. Flinders Island Bakery

The only decent coffee on the island is at the only bakery. Try a wallaby and red-wine pie or pick up some preservative-free bread made with rainwater. Open on weekends in summer.
