Lonely Planet review for Sydney Harbour

Sydney's stunning harbour has melded and shaped the local psyche since the first days of settlement, and today it's both a major working port and the city's sparkling playground. Its waters, beaches, islands and shorefront parks offer all the swimming, sailing, picnicking, walking and real-estate fantasies you could wish for.

The best way to view the harbour is by private yacht (yeah, right). Lacking this, just take a harbour cruise or catch any one of the many ferries that ply its waters. You can also fly above it via a scenic flight. The Manly ferry offers vistas of the harbour east of the bridge, while the Parramatta RiverCats cover the west. You can also visit some of the small islands, which are part of the stupendous Sydney Harbour National Park.

The Sydney Harbour Bridge Climb is a must. It's advertised as quite a high adrenaline experience and I was a bit nervous, but you're harnessed on and the guides stop you every few minutes or so to point out places of interest and, I suspect, to make sure the climb is accessible to people of al ages and fitness levels. Seriously, it's not that hard and I'm middle aged and not terribly fit. The views are amazing, you can't take anything up there so photos aren't an option and it is quite expensive, but it is an unforgettable experience. When I went, visibility was good and the weather was seasonably warm for Australian winter(At least it was for a Brit).
Really, I don't see how you can travel to the other side of the world and visit, in my opinion, one of the most beautiful city harbours you will ever see, and not take the opportunity to reach the top of this iconic landmark.
When I go back to Sydney, and I most surely will, I will do the climb again, I'd like to try for a sunset one.
