Lonely Planet review for The Rocks Market

The promoter’s line goes, ‘Choose something you like, somewhere you love’. Under a long white canopy, the 150 stalls here are a little on the tacky side of the tracks (fossils, opals, faux Aboriginal art etc) but are still worth a gander. Maybe what you choose to like will be the buskers and a beer at the pub.

    Vibrant Quality Market, Great Atmosphere

    Cloudspinning recommends this,

Actually - The Rocks Market is much bigger than under a long white canopy. That is is the old market. The expanded market, as of 2008 stretches from Jack Munday Place, through Playfair Street and the Rocks Square, and meets at the George Street Canopy.

Far from being tacky (go to Paddy's market for tacky), the Rocks Market actually sells hand made products as well as some fantastic fossils, Australian art and craft and many other things. Quality opals are to be found in the retail shops (don't expect a bargain). There is no faux aboriginal art there, as the rules of the market are quite strict. Infact, the Rocks Market is probably the premier designer market in Sydney, and you will not find trashy plasticy or tacky items for sale here.
