The Rocks Market
The promoter’s line goes, ‘Choose something you like, somewhere you love’. Under a long white canopy, the 150 stalls here are a little on the tacky side of the tracks (fossils, opals, faux Aboriginal art etc) but are still worth a gander. Maybe what you choose to like will be the buskers and a beer at the pub.

Paddy’s Markets
Cavernous, 1000-stall Paddy’s is the Sydney equivalent of Istanbul’s Grand Bazaar, but swap the hookahs and carpets for mobile-phone covers, Eminem T-shirts and cheap sneakers. Pick up a VB singlet for Uncle Bruce or wander the aisles in capitalist awe. Market City (9288 8900; www.marketcity.com.au) shopping centre is upstairs.

Good Living Growers' Market
This picturesque foodies' market not far from Darling Harbour showcases the best NSW regional produce. Peruse the 90 stalls packed with all sorts of delicacies from goat's cheese and sourdough bread to smoked tuna and wattleseed ice cream. Grab a coffee and reconstitute with an egg, bacon and chutney roll.

Opera House Market
Under big, cream umbrellas and Opera House arcs, elbow for position in the hunt for high-quality contemporary Australian ceramics, gems, toys, jewellery, hats, paintings, photographs and souvenirs. If the 40 stalls don't satisfy, just dig the architecture.

Rozelle Markets
One of Sydney’s best bargain-hunter markets, with very few tourists. Sift through hippie jewellery, vintage clothes, plants, books and knick-knackery, with live folk music, palm readings and exotic food stalls as a backdrop.

Surry Hills Markets
There’s a chipper community vibe here, with mainly locals renting stalls to sell/recycle their old stuff: clothes, CDs, books and sundry junk. Bargains aplenty – if only it were more frequent!

A wonderful monthly market offering everything from vintage clothes and real (and faux) antiques to kids’ gear and all kinds of jewellery. Exotic foods and lively harbourside hubbub.
