    Original & Authentic Aboriginal Art

This trustworthy gallery specialises in works from four specific regions – the Central and Western Deserts, Queensland, Arnhem Land and the Kimberley. There is info available on the artists, and some more unusual stuff for sale, such as painted glass and traditional sand paintings preserved on canvas.

    Birrung Gallery

Representing more than 400 indigenous artists and 25 remote communities from all around Australia, Birrung is a gorgeous gallery incongruously located on one of Sydney’s least gorgeous intersections. Still, the effect of all that red ochre, yellow and black against the clean white gallery walls is transcendent. Prices start at around $100.

    Puppet Shop at the Rocks

Puppet master Phillip (all the way from the Belgian Congo) beguiles you with his accent as you ‘enter the dazzling caves of wonders’. Dangling from the ceiling of his sandstone cellar are hundreds of incredible handmade wizards, skeletons, soldiers, jesters and spooky Chinese puppets. We’d hate to come here at night…

    Artery

Artery deliberately steers away from the glitzy Sydney gallery scene, sourcing its contemporary, original selections from up-and-coming Central Australian artists. Prices are reasonably realistic – modern indigenous jewellery, hand-woven baskets and gorgeous canvases start at around $30.

Selling only authentic Aboriginal products that are licensed, authorised or purchased directly from artists or communities, Gavala stirs up a prepackaged outback vibe and has a mind-boggling gallery of paintings, hunting boomerangs, didgeridoos, handmade artefacts, books, clothing and CDs.
