Lonely Planet review for Thai Pothong

This place has won a bowlful of ‘Best Thai Restaurant in Sydney’ awards. The menu is predictable and the usual rabble of golden Buddhas festoons the walls, but the mood is oddly romantic. Pull up a window seat and watch the Newtowners pass by.

    Too expensive...

    I like this restaurant but in my opinion the price of all meals here is about 20% higher than any of the other Thai restaurants restaurants in the area.

    They have won local business awards for the past several years and do great food and have a reasonably good service record to back them up, but traveling 300m down towards Enmore and you get a mass of Thai restaurants with food as good and way cheaper too.

    The only thing for me that makes this place stand out is the decor, they really have gone and made the decor very unique with plenty of statues and unique items scattered throughout the dining area.

    I would recommend eating here but if you are strapped for cash then simply go for a stroll short and you can get similar food for a fraction of the cost.

    Fancy Thai if dining to impress

    This place is massive, with long communal tables spanning the floor. It is fabulous for a large groups, as they do take reservations and can cater for large groups of more than 15 people, which alot of other Thai places in the area simply cannot cater for. The food is well presented, but you pay more than you would compared to other Thai places- and there are plenty of Thai places on King Street. And the Thai is always good around Newtown so wherever you end up, you cant go too wrong. Last time i went with a group, they had a weekend surcharge as well.

    If your alone, on a budget, or are out for quick no fuss Thai, there are places around the corner more suited for you. If you need bookings, have a large group or are trying to impress that special someone, then this is the place for you. And i can recommend the red curry.
