Lonely Planet review for Longrain

Longrain makes serving dozens of diners look easy. Inside a century-old, wedge-shaped printing-press building, urbanites slurp down delicacies such as red venison and snakebean curry or caramelised pork hock with five spices and chilli vinegar. Sip a Caipiroska (vodka, crushed lime and sugar syrup) at the bar afterwards.

    Sydney's Best Thai

    meganb_aussie recommends this,

It has been said that the Thai food in Sydney may be even better than Thai food in Thailand. The swathes of Thai restaurants along King St in Newtown and numerous chain Thai restaurants are testamount to it's popularity. So, if you're looking for Sydney's best Thai, Longrain is it.
Sure, the food isn't cheap, with mains at $35-$40, but it's a really special place and the food is mind-blowing.
You can't book for dinner, so arrive early and sip on Longrain's famous cocktails in the bar, before being escorted to your spot on one of the long communal tables. It's best to come with friends so you can share your dishes and try a bit of everything - Caramalised Pork Hock is famous for a reason, but also try the Beetle Leaves and Soft Shell Crab.
    You'll love it!

    Searching for the perfect cocktail

    melfrommanly recommends this,

"Cocktails. Fantastic. Amazing. It had ginger in it. We have to go. HAVE to."

This was the fortieth conversation where Kimi and I had discussed Longrain's cocktails. She had been going on about it for WEEKS. The perfect cocktail. No name- we had discussed that; nothing else other than it had ginger in it. And it was amazing.

Being Kimi's birthday, we decided to have a couple of cocktails at Longrain and replicate this amazing cocktail experience. We were then going to meet up with some friends for dinner at a nearby Japanese place.

Neither Kimi or I have a directional instinct. Many a time have we been lost going out somewhere or even driving home. Getting to Longrain was no different for us. We stopped at a seedy Surry Hills pub to ask for directions. We walked out with only wolf whistles. Kimi's printed directions were no help, as neither of us can read a map. Finally we stumbled across Longrain. I don't think it would be that hard to find if you're a normal person.

We found a space on a communal long wooden table and our eyes lit up over the cocktail menu. Scrumptious!!! Amazing ingredients like watermelon, passionfruit and ginger coupled with vodka and gin. It was very difficult to choose but Kimi instantly knew which was THE cocktail and we both had it. It was divine!!! We felt slightly sophisticated and tried not to show too much of our appreciation for the good looking bar boy.

We didn't stay for dinner, but we did suffer food envy. i want to go back, sometime soon, before I leave Sydney to go backpacking thru Africa. If only we didn't have other dinner reservations...we would have stayed all night.

I can't remember the name of the perfect cocktail but i do remeber it was AMAZING. Kimi and I still talk about it. I would suggest you go to Longrain and try any cocktail with ginger in it. And maybe vodka, I'm not really sure. It was truly amazing.
