Lonely Planet review for Bourke Street Bakery

It hasn’t been around forever, but the Bourke St Bakery has quickly become an essential Surry Hills experience, offering up a mean selection of pastries, cakes, croissants, tarts, quiches and organic breads, all baked with that rare combo of deliciousness, dedication and delight. If you’re hungover, the coffee here will right your rudder.

    Bourke Street Bakery

    disconouvo does not recommend this,

Bourke Street Bakery - Always an officious out of work actor/staff member barking directions at customers and throwing food into bags. It's like they are all coming down from party drugs. Not dog friendly. Slow Service. Burnt Pastries. High Prices. The Ed Hardy of bread shops, over rated over priced. Try and avoid it!

    Pietastic

    iallan recommends this,

Aussies love their pies, they really do and Bourke Street Bakery is a gem of a pie mecca. Hidden in the resedential area of Bourke Street you invariably have to queue (which often stretches out of the shop and round the corner). But boy is it worth the wait, not only are the pies spectacular but the fresh breads and pastries are pretty tasty too. What can I say Aussies know their pies!

    Best sausage rolls ever!!!

    olivia87 recommends this,

I have never had such divine sausage rolls. Relative ok parking but often crowded. Don't expect to get seats as it's often packed by locals.

    Lemon tart goodness

    lividlili recommends this,

I always order a lemon tart in a bakery; it's a good benchmark. Although the Bourke Street lemon tart wasn't the most awesomest tart I've ever had, it came in a close second. Oh so creamy! And the pastry was oh so light! I also bought a sourdough loaf to take home and had a coffee and pain au chocolat in. All were excellent and not too pricey.
Food blogs I've read suggest that service is notoriously bad but I went in when it wasn't busy so didn't have any problems. The bakery has two other locations; one on Broadway, and another in Alexandria.
