Palms on Oxford
No one admits to coming here, but the occasional queues prove them liars. In this underground dance bar, the heyday of Stock Aitken Waterman never ended. It may be uncool, but if you don’t scream when Kylie hits the turntables you’ll be the only one.

Lady Lux
The Lady was having a facelift when we visited, but we’re assured that the sophisticated but seductive vibe of this intimate club will endure (let us know if not!). Friday is underground house night with loads of international DJs. Sunday is mammoth, attracting the young and restless, sticking it out until the first train back to the ’burbs.

Cross Lounge
It's so hot and new the bouncers are working overtime. This classy disco sports a glowing pink bar, a lounge area for wallflowers and of course the hoppin' dance floor. Wear your best and get ready for slammin' house and funk music. Friday night is ladies' night, complete with male strippers. It's located above the snazzy Bourbon bar.

Q Bar
With more reincarnations than Cleopatra over the years, this funky and eclectic joint (located in the Exchange Hotel) has DJs playing nightly. Weekends means house and dance music, but if you're not into that there's always the pool table and cocktail bar. On Fridays and Saturdays this place should be more accurately named Queue Bar.

Tank
Down an alleyway dark and dank is Tank. They’ve got a VIP room – the question is, are you ‘I’ enough? Muster tankloads of glamour and crash the party. Otherwise, mingle with waaay -too-young, clean-shaven stockbrokers and their waiflike girlfriends in this world-class underground club.

Candy’s Apartment
It’s dark and very sweaty in this subterranean venue with two bars, a dance floor and a space for bands to play (Aussie acts Wolfmother and the Presets have both graced Candy’s stage). At weekends they pack ’em in and you’ll find plenty of guys and gals scanning the crowd hoping they won’t go home alone.
