Bus

You can book tickets for Premier Stateliner at the bus station (8642 5055; 23 Mackay St) but not for Greyhound Australia.

Greyhound Australia (13 14 99) travels daily to Alice Springs ($236, 14 hours) via Coober Pedy ($95, six hours), and Darwin ($515, 35 hours).

Premier Stateliner (8642 5055) runs daily to Adelaide ($45, four hours), Port Lincoln ($63, 4½ hours) and Ceduna ($83, 6½ hours).

Yorke Peninsula Coaches (1800 625 099, 8666 2255; adult/child $6/3) heads north to Quorn, Wilmington and a few smaller towns in the southern Flinders on Friday.

Gulf Getaways (1800 170 170; 12 Victoria Pde) offers a twice-weekly service to Wilpena Pound, stopping at a few towns along the way.

Train

The Ghan and Indian Pacific trains pass through Port Augusta en route to mainland capitals, stopping at Stirling Rd Station (8642 6699). Great Southern Railways (13 21 47; www.trainways.com.au) offers excellent backpacker deals and discounts.

Full-fare options departing from Port Augusta include: Adelaide (seat $52, four hours); Alice Springs (seat/twin-share/1st-class sleeper $205/560/725, 16 hours, Friday and Sunday); Darwin (seat/twin-share/1st-class sleeper $510/1375/1760, 43 hours, Friday and Sunday); Perth (seat/twin-share/1st-class sleeper $315/885/1150, 33 hours, Thursday and Sunday); and Sydney (seat/twin-share/1st-class sleeper $220/640/830, 32 hours, Friday and Tuesday).

For a more-scenic trip, Pichi Richi Railway (1800 440 101; www.prr.org.au) goes to Quorn ($34, 1¾ hours) and back on Saturday.
