Brisbane Powerhouse
On the eastern fringes of New Farm Park stands the Powerhouse, a former power station that's been superbly transformed into a contemporary arts centre. It hosts a range of visual arts and music performances (many free), and has two restaurants with great river views.

Julalikari Arts Centre
It's best to visit the 'Pink Palace', at the entrance to the Ngalpa Ngalpa community (also known as Mulga Camp), mid-morning when the artists are at work painting traditional and contemporary art. You can chat to the artists and purchase directly from the painter.

Carriageworks
Built between 1880 and 1889, this intriguing group of huge Victorian-era workshops was part of the Eveleigh Railyards. The rail workers chugged out in 1988 and in 2007 the artists pranced in. It's now home to various avant-garde arts and performance projects, and there's usually something interesting to check out.
One of Sydney's top contemporary galleries, Anna Schwartz Gallery, is here, alongside Performance Space, the Eveleigh Farmers' Market and Artisan's Market.
