    MoVida

Movida is nestled in a cobbled laneway emblazoned with one of the world's densest collections of street art; it doesn't get much more Melbourne than this. Line up along the bar, cluster around little window tables or, if you've booked, take a table in the dining area. Movida Next Door is the perfect place for a pre-show beer and tapas, while way in the lawyer-end of town is larger Movida Aqui, with its lovely terrace.

    Casa Asturiana

Tapas is flavour of the decade in Sydney, but this atmospheric eatery under the monorail in Sydney’s chico Spanish Quarter predates the current trend. Order up plates of delicious seafood, meat and vegetarian titbits, washed down with a rough rioja, sangria or Asturian cider. If you’re in the mood for a cazuela (baked fish fillet), paella or even some weekend flamenco, you’re in luck.

    Bodega

The coolest progeny of Sydney’s recent tapas explosion, Bodega has a casual vibe, good-lookin’ staff and a retro-funky matador mural. Tapas dishes vary widely in size and price, from spiced pumpkin and feta empanadas to hefty slabs of seared salmon with tahini and pickled cucumber. Wash ’em down with Hispanic wine, sherry, port or beer and plenty of Mediterranean gusto.

    Añada

Dishes such as mackerel with orange-blossom and pistachio or veal meatballs and braised cuttlefish are alive with hearty Spanish and Muslim Mediterranean flavours. It’s unpretentious, passionate cooking and the place fills up most nights. There’s the usual arrangement of big and little plates plus a good selection of Iberian wines. Book ahead or try to nab a table at the bar or outside.

    Legends

This lively Spanish restaurant is upstairs in the Capital Cinema Centre. House specialities include paella (a vegetarian version is available) and bacalao (dried salted cod), and there are lots of delicious tapas (from $12) to nibble. There’s also the odd bit of live flamenco guitar most nights.

    Alhambra

Equal parts Spanish and Moorish, open-walled Alhambra on Manly’s harbour side serves up tapas, tagines and meaty char-grilled mains. On Friday and Saturday nights flamenco guitarists and dancers spice things up a notch or two. The Moorish meatballs are utterly moreish.

    Spanish Tapas

This is a good-time restaurant: shared tapas plates, spirited music, raucous diners and waiters who say, ‘Yezz, we jave a table forl yo’. Cheap jugs of sangria will dissolve any party resistance and fire you up for the flamenco dancing displays.

    Pelican

This modern space evokes beach shacks of days gone by, and makes for a lovely spot to watch the Fitzroy St circus in full swing. Tapas here is not aiming for Iberian authenticity, just good-tasting accompaniments to the extensive drinks menu.

    Ortiga

One of Brisbane's best new restaurants, Ortiga opened in 2010 to much fanfare. You can dine in the stylish upstairs tapas bar with rustic wood tables or head to the elegant subterranean dining room where chefs work their magic in an open kitchen. Top picks include cochinillo (slow-cooked suckling pig), pulpo a gallega (Galician-braised octopus) and whole slow-cooked lamb shoulder.
