Pub restaurants in Australia

A
Mansfield Hotel
The flashiest of Mansfield’s pubs has a huge dining room and extensive, innovative bistro menu to go with it. Pull up a couch by the fireplace in winter or eat out in the sunny beer terrace in summer.

B
Grange Hotel
With a fine reputation for bistro dining, there's a good mix of dishes here with plenty of seafood on offer. Great views over the water and full table service make for dining excellence. It won the 'Best Bistro in Australia' award from the Australian Hotels Association a couple of years ago and standards have been maintained.

Sporties
It may not strictly be a pub, but with sporting paraphernalia adorning the bar (which serves cold beer on tap) it may as well be. Street seating provides pole position to spectate while hoeing into a focaccia or baguette, pasta, or a pub-style meat-and-three veg meal.

D
OnAqua Restaurant & Bar
By candlelight, murmurs of conversations resolve into a soothing chant as tastebuds tango at this small and intimate restaurant overlooking a sapphire-blue pool and the Coral Sea beyond. To describe the menu here as simply food is an injustice. This is gastro par excellence, a multidish journey through modern Australian cuisine. Service is efficiently attentive but non-obtrusive - just enough space between courses to pause for savouring and superlatives.
OnAqua oozes taste in more ways than one but is not pretentious.

E
Northern & Exchange Hotel
Joining these two old pubs has created a dining juggernaut. In this rambling space there's Maxi's Pizza Bar producing pizzas with kooky local names (Brachina Gorge Hawaiian) but familiar flavours; and Wharfies Bistro does oysters, steaks and hickory chicken and has an average salad bar. The bar also does counter meals ($10 to $16).

F
Richmond Arms Hotel
The grand old Richmond pub has four good-quality motel-style units in the adjacent former stables. On-site there's the dual attraction of the cosy dining room (mains $15 to $25, open lunch and dinner) and sunny garden bar. Coal River Valley wines are available.

G
Royal Oak Hotel
Hands down Launceston’s best pub – grungy, friendly and convivial with stacks of beers on tap, open mic nights (the last Wednesday of the month) and live acoustic rock Wednesday to Sunday. Decent pub meals, too, with a kids’ menu and a family-friendly vibe.

H
Hoolihan's
Like all good Irish pubs, Hoolihan's is wildly popular, especially with the backpacker crowd. Maybe it's got something to do with its hard-drinking ethos and carbo-laden meals.

Bush Inn Bar & Grill
The Bush Inn, in the crumbling but super-atmospheric old Criterion Hotel, serves some of the best pub food in town and is very popular with locals. There are huge steaks, slabs of barramundi, chicken dishes and pizzas on the menu.

Royal Oak
Winning pub grub at this enduring pub boozer: steak sangers, vegie lasagne, lamb shank pie, king prawn salad and blueberry pancakes (not all at once). Quirky retro vibe; live jazz/indie-rock Tuesday, Wednesday and Sunday.

Cooinda Club
Specialising in pub-style dishes, the Cooinda loves a good theme night (schnitzel, seafood etc). But there's also a few gourmet surprises including the feral mixed grill with venison, emu and 'roo fillet.

You can't leave Maggie without enjoying a cold one by the window as the sun sets across the bay at this busy seaside pub. The meals are on the large side and revolve around seafood. Great value.
