Breakfast restaurants in Australia

  1. A

    Cafe Zest

This cafe-gallery fills a tiny crack between buildings, but its laid-back vibe and brilliant breakfasts more than compensate for any shortcomings in size. Baguettes and bagels are crammed with creative combos, or banish your hangover with some ‘Hells Eggs’: two potted eggs with tomato, capsicum and rosemary salsa, topped with grilled cheese and Tabasco sauce. Great coffee, arty staff, and vegetarian specials too.

    Byron Orion

Orion's open door policy stops passers by in their tracks. It could be the delicious red vinyl walls and supper cocktails, but we're pretty sure it's the hot and spicy scents courtesy of Gujurauti beef, rogan josh, and vindaloo. Breakfast is decidedly Australian free range eggs.

  3. C

    Cafe Balaena

This efficient and friendly cafe in the heart of the Hervey Bay Marina serves gourmet croissants and outstanding fruit juices. At lunch and dinner the menu is equally trendy, boasting mountainous hot sandwiches and salads, with a good dose of fresh seafood.

  4. D

    Sassafras

This delightful little cafe, great for vegetarian options, has good-value meals for those on a tight budget. Scrambled tofu on Turkish bread goes down well, or the goats-cheese omelette with roast capsicum and spinach will fill the gaps.

    Pandemonium Café

This is a fun '70s-style café filled with op-shop tables, battered vinyl sofas and crocheted cushions. Breakfast is served all day but there are also home comfort foods such as sandwiches, burgers, and bangers and mash.

  6. F

    Argent St Café & Restaurant

Bright and shiny new, with Badger Bates' protégés' art works on display, this features an artists studio throughout summer. There's good old Aussie tucker (like lamb shanks Italian style!), and a great range of dairy-, lactose-, gluten- or meat-free meals. Great all-day breakfast, BYO and Dine-and-Wine. And coffee to walk a mile for.

    DOV

It's probably linked to endless nights of party-love, but big breakfasts are something Sydney does well. DOV, the busiest café on Victoria St, does one of the best. If they sleep through breakfast, locals, backpackers, style-mongers and filmmakers squish in for lunch and dinner. The DOV burger reigns supreme.

    Ladah

The menu’s written on butchers’ paper on the wall, but this ain’t no primary-school cooking class – it’s special. The cinnamon scones with jam and cream are indulgent and delicious, or try the flourless choc hazelnut mud cake. Breakfast is served all day and the coffee’s great.

    Sunshine Foodstore

Multipurpose food stores like these are just so happy summer holidays! While awaiting plates of pesto-laden scrambled eggs or mouth-wrenching ciabatta, bright-eyed news fiends scour headlines from behind enormous juice cups and designer sunnies.

    Two Good Eggs

We love the egg-shaped lighting fixtures and industrial feel of this corner café on the lower slopes of Surry Hills. It's a great spot for a weekday breakfast, killer coffee and yes, eggs dominate.
