Lonely Planet review for South Bank Parklands

This beautiful smear of green park, skirting the western side of the Brisbane River, is home to cultural attractions, fine eateries, small rainforests, hidden lawns and gorgeous flora. The standout attractions here are Streets Beach, a funky artificial beach resembling a tropical lagoon, and, behind the beach, Stanley Street Plaza, a renovated section of historic Stanley St, with shops, cafes and a tourist information centre.

On the eastern edge of the parklands is the Queensland Maritime Museum, which has a wide-ranging display of maritime adventures (and misadventures) along the coast. It's worth shelling out a little extra to tour the dry dock – the museum highlight is clambering around the fascinating rooms of the HMAS Diamantina, a restored 1944 navy frigate.

The London Eye–style Wheel of Brisbane offers 360-degree views from its 60m heights; rides last around 15 minutes and include audio commentary of Brisbane sights.

The South Bank Parklands are within easy walking distance of the city centre, but CityCat and Inner City Ferries also stop there; you can also get there by bus or train from Roma St or Central Station.

fantastic spot in Brisbane to hang out and relax

    mistymorning recommends this,

The South Bank Parklands are quite possibly the nicest and best spot in Brisbane to hang out, relax, take a stroll, have a picnic (or BBQ by using one of the public grills!), go for a swim, spend time with your friends or family... I lived within walking distance to South Bank for four months and I went there a lot. It never seemed to get old. You can swim for free in the public lagoon (complete with artificial beach), there's a water-games area for kids; not to mention there's heaps of cafes, restaurants, take-away places... and also some good bars and pubs nearby on Stanley Street.

The Parklands are wonderful if you want to take a stroll or lie in the grass and read book, have an ice cream... but also to meet your friends there for drinks or dinner. Occasionally there's events (usually free) at the Suncorp Piazza. And if you're up for something especially tourist-y, take a ride on the Wheel of Brisbane.
