Lonely Planet review for St John’s Cathedral
East of Roma St Parkland heading towards Fortitude Valley is St John’sCathedral, a fine example of 19th-century Gothic Revival architecture. The building was recently completed according to its original design, 102 years after construction commenced.

Great experience

St John's (Anglican) Cathedral Brisbane is the last great neo-gothic Cathedral to be built in the southern hemisphere. The Cathedral has been under construction since 1906 and is now complete with the western towers and central tower completed in 2009.
The interior of the building is amazing. It looks like a thirteenth century French Cistercian monastery church with beautiful cream coloured stone, masses of tall pillars, a superb stone vaulted ceiling that goes from one end of the building to the other and beautiful stained glass windows.
It was designed by the great nineteenth century English church architect John Loughborough Pearson (who is buried in Westminster Abbey in London) and is considered his finest work.
Brisbane is a big city of glass and concrete skyscrapers and it's just lovely going into the Cathedral to escape the hustle and bustle of the city. There are guides on duty every day of the week who can take you around free of charge, though a donation is appreciated.
The Cathedral has quite a few works of art including some lovely Orthodox style icons. It also has a British flag (union jack) which was possibly the first flag carried by the ANZAC (Australian and New soldiers) at the famous dawn landings at Gallipoli in Turkey during World War II.
The Cathedral has a huge pipe organ and a traditional Anglican choir of men and boys who sing on Sundays It also has a peal of 12 bells in the new central tower which you can hear on Sunday mornings before the 9.30 service or sometimes on Saturday afternoons for weddings.
It's amazing that such an incredible stone building like this has been completed in Australia in the 21st century.
If you are in Brisbane this beautiful building is a must visit.
