Lonely Planet review for E’cco

A slick bistro set within a converted tea warehouse near the Story Bridge, E’cco has won dozens of awards for its innovative, gourmet cuisine. Field mushrooms with olive toast, rocket, parmesan, truffle oil and lemon is the staff’s recommendation from the menu.

    loud, crowded, overpriced, over rated.

    treaclemustard does not recommend this,

First ate here in November 2008 and was daft enough to try it again earlier this month. We were again disappointed - it really doesn't live up to all the hype - we were in Australia for three weeks this January and ate many better meals in places with an ambiance far superior to the hustle and bustle that goes along with E'cco. The tables are really packed closely together so conversations from neighboring tables drown out the conversation at yours. Additionally the warehouse environment, open kitchen and lack of soft furnishings make it excessively noisy - why they play background music, I can't imagine. We all ended up shouting at one another because we simply could not hear. The portions were lavish - my sons, who have gargantuan appetites, were unable to finish their mains - we had eaten starters.

In the Lonely Planet guide this restaurant continues to receive a special recommendation - I'm at pains to understand why and suspect that the restaurant reviewers for the publication have not actually dined there in several years.

The menu choices were not great and it was shocking to see that the three cheeses offered for dessert were all imported.

The concierge at our hotel suggested Jellyfish and I wish that we had dined there instead.

Great Place to Reward Your Workmates

    abianco recommends this,

A couple of years ago, I took my work team out to Ecco Bistro for lunch to reward them for their dedication, and the fantastic and hard work they had put in for the previous year. Ecco made my job so much easier by providing a) a fantastic, laid back atmosphere with impeccable service, b) a huge and delicious and wine selection (we sampled some brilliant reds) and c) great food. We stayed there for about 3 hours having a great time and enjoying ourselves, and we got to know each other better since we were located outside of the office (or in other words, a fluorescent prison). My team liked the afternoon so much, that they recommended Ecco to other teams within the company, not to mention, making the other teams jealous! Ecco is a great place for this kind of function, or if you want to take out that someone special to a swish but reasonable restaurant in Brisbane. It's usually packed when I go past there, so get in early and book!

    Seriously sensational

    littlebeattle recommends this,

I hadn’t been to E’cco for seven years, and when I dinned there a few weeks ago, nothing had changed – the same brilliant staff, menu and ambiance that you would expect!

Our waitress was exceptional – a wonderful mix of being in the right place to answer your questions, but not actually being noticed. We shared prawns as the entrée, had a confit of duck with seasonal vegetables as a main and shared the absolutely divine gooey banana chocolate cake in pastry for dessert.

The clientele is really interesting - a mix of young couples, families, older diners and work crowds – contributing to the happy and cheerful atmosphere without being over-the-top or too loud.

10 out of 10 from me.

Just a note: you can’t park in the side streets till after 7pm, as we discovered when we tried to start a little early with a drink at the bar!
