Lonely Planet review for Three Monkeys Coffee House

A family business for 14 years, Three Monkeys serves it up supersized – piping hot coffee and spicy chai come in soup bowls. Hide away in the cosy den, or wolf down your chocolate cake on the bench outside.

Brilliant cafe; temporarily out of action :(

    mlle_loulou recommends this,

Three Monkeys has been a staple hangout for students, travellers and West-Enders for *years*.

All the reviews below do it great justice :)

Unfortunately it was a bit inundated in the Brisbane flooding in the past few weeks as it is located in a low-lying part of South Brisbane.

Happily (judging from the info here http://www.ourbrisbane.com/food-and-drink/543188.the-three-monkeys-coffee-tea-house) it appears to be only temporary.

I'm sure it'll be back up and running soon for us to play backgammon to our little hearts' content!

Good for: coffee, chilling out, chess, tea, low lighting, backgammon, studying, catching up with friends

    Not good for: table service

Great place for locals & travellers - morning, noon, night!

    mistymorning recommends this,

The Three Monkeys is located almost on the corner of Boundary St and Mollison St. No matter what time of the day you go there, the food is usually great (breakfast, lunch, dinner), they make good coffees, smoothies, and shakes, and there's always lots of interesting people in there: Locals who get together for a cup of coffee and a slice of one of their amazing(!) cakes... Travellers who are checking out the hotspots in West End... Friends playing a game of chees while chewing on delicious nachos... I made some fond memories at The Three Monkeys three years ago, and now that I am back in Brisbane I was excited to see that the place still has the same wonderful vibe, nice staff, and great atmosphere as it used to.

I especially love the outside/"patio" area. So many times we have gotten together at The Three Monkeys for dinner or drinks with the intention of going somewhere else in West End afterwards, only to end up staying til late!

Good for: atmosphere, cakes, chess, dinner with friends or a date, Relaxation and good food, conversations

    Not good for: thrill seekers

See- atmosphere, Hear – people, Speak – good things

    ladybirch recommends this,

The Three Monkeys is a Brisbane institution. Oozing atmosphere, this rabbit warren of rooms (each filled with comfortable chairs and interesting eastern decor) is a great place to hide away for a few hours, escaping the heat and enjoying a sandwich while you read a book or challenge your neighbor to chess.

Located in Brisbane's trendy West End, this hipster hang out is worth a visit if you are in the area and is a convenient walk or bus ride from GOMA (Gallery of Modern Art).

Good for: atmosphere, people watching, food lovers, relaxing, coffee lovers, chess

    Eclectic meets mainstream

    cldeans recommends this,

Three Monkeys is the sort of place you visit once and then keep going back. Definitely a coffee shop more than a restaurant, nevertheless the cozy nooks with chess board tables, Arabian style scarves hanging from the ceiling, and quite simply, the amazing atmosphere (more reminiscent of a university hangout than a cosmopolitan coffee house) will keep Three Monkeys in your memory forever. Oh ... and the food is pretty good too :)

Good for: Romance, atmosphere, food, Groups, Solo Travellers, service

A cool place to chill out and relax

    abianco recommends this,

The Three Monkeys coffee house is a popular institution located in the inner Brisbane suburb of West End. There is a huge range of delicious and artery-coating cakes which are easily washed down with some fine coffees and other beverages. Friday nights and weekends are especially busy, and you might have to wait for a seat. The eclectic setting is decorated by a cluttering of exotic objects from around the globe, including a number of 'Three Monkeys' crafted pieces. It's a great place to go after a meal for dessert, or just to catch up with friends and family in an Arabian nights setting. Drink up!

A cute cosy nook to play chess and drink Chai Tea

    jessi_04 recommends this,

This old little house turned cute coffee spot is ecclectic and fun. The many different rooms, followed by the out- door setting make it a great cosy tea house to share a game with friends while drinking one of thier yummy chai teas that come in the biggest bowl possible. The food ranges from nachos to a variety of scrumptous cakes, all yummy and all served by friendly relaxed staff. A busy place even at late hours of the night! A must for all visitors to West End.

Good for: atmosphere, food, Budget Travellers, Groups, Solo Travellers

Relax into the charm and Chai

    dustylaptop recommends this,

Three Monkeys has served and continues to serve a number of generations of laid back coffee fanatics and casual cake lovers. While the nachos and cafe menu fare attracts its fans, the real charm of Three Monkey's atmospheric surrounds has as much to do with caffeine and sweets as it does the cosy nooks and crannies to perch, study the Who's Who of signed theatre artwork on the wall or simply relax to the sound of world music. A popular destination in the laid back suburb of West End and it's renowned dining options, Three Monkeys is open to all comers with a definite alternative and arts vibe. Play a game of chess over a cup of Chai with that special someone, or relax in the courtyard with a group of friends over a bowl of Nachos.
