Getting there & around
Hire car is the ideal way to get around as there are so many stops over short distances, but Whitecar Coaches (07-4091 1855; www.whitecarcoaches.com) has up to four services a day to Mareeba ($16.80, one hour) and Atherton ($22, 1¾ hours) from Cairns, with a Saturday morning and afternoon service (only one service on Sunday and public holidays). On weekdays there are also onward connections to Herberton ($28, two hours) and Ravenshoe ($31, 2½ hours).
If you’re travelling by car, be careful driving from Mareeba to Cairns as there are no fences and the Brahmin cattle certainly don’t expect to move out of your way.
