Springvale Homestead
Alfred Giles established Springvale Homestead in 1879 after he drove 2000 cattle and horses and 12,000 head of sheep from Adelaide to the site in 19 months. It claims to be the oldest cattle station in the Northern Territory. The stone homestead still stands by the river, about 7km southwest of town, and the surrounding riverside property is now a caravan and camping resort. There's a free homestead tour at 3pm daily (except Saturday) from May to September. Canoe hire per hour/two hours/day costs $15/20/73. There's also accommodation here.

Jurassic Cycad Gardens
Jurassic Cycad Gardens is home to over 200 species of prehistoric cycads, collected and seeded from around Australia and overseas. A self-guided tour through the remarkable maze of rare plants also takes you past baobabs, rock figs, ferns and cacti. The attached cafe is a good place for breakfast or lunch.

Katherine Outback Heritage Museum
Katherine Outback Heritage Museum is in the old airport terminal, about 3km from town on the road to the gorge. The original Gypsy Moth biplane flown by Dr Clyde Fenton, the first Flying Doctor, is housed here. There’s a good selection of historical photos, including a display on the 1998 flood.

School of the Air
At the School of the Air, 1.5km from the town centre, you can listen into a class and see how kids in the remote outback are educated in the virtual world. Guided tours are held at 9am, 10am and 11am on weekdays; bookings preferred.

Railway Museum
It's been a lot of years since the engine displayed at the Railway Museum ran out of steam. Housed in the original station building (1926), historical displays also reveal the function of the humble railway throughout WWII.

Katherine Low Level Nature Park
The park is a scenic spot on the banks of the babbling Katherine River, just off the Victoria Hwy (Rte 1) 4km from town. It has a popular dry-season swimming hole linked to crystalline thermal pools (access via Murray St) and town by a tree-lined shared cycle way/footpath.
