Introducing Humpty Doo
Only 10km along the highway you come to a small but spread-out town with the unlikely name of Humpty Doo. You first pass a turn into a bland modern shopping centre, but continue further up the highway to the self-proclaimed ‘world famous’ Humpty Doo Hotel (8988 1372; www.humptydoohotel.com.au; Arnhem Hwy; d $80, cabins $95). It’s a popular local that serves lunch and dinner ($12 to $20). There are big Sunday sessions and weekend local bands.
